What is first aid for a seizure?

  1. Stay calm, protect the child from injury
  2. Turn them on their side (Left or right),
  3. Avoid putting anything in their mouth. Putting finger in mouth may damage or cut caregivers finger or putting metal in child’s mouth may daage child’s teeth.
  4. If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, seek emergency medical help in nearest possible medical center
  5. Certain medicines like midazolam nasal spray (Available in India) can be used in appropriate prescribed dose as per child’s weight for any seizure lasting for more than 5 min

How to use Midazolam nasal spray

When to use:

Use it for generalized seizures after 5 min if seizures are not controlled.

Use it for focal seizure after 10 min if not controlled

You can use 2nd dose of midazolam spray after 10 min of 1st dose if seizures still continuing.

 

Preparing to use:

Open the packet, You will see a medicine bottle and a plunger inside

Attach plunger to the medicine bottle

Uncover the cap from the nasal piece

Priming the spray for the first use: Make sure you have sprayed at least 1 spray in air before use Use of the drug for emergency control

 

Steps to administer the spray:

Lift the child’s head approximately 30 degrees

Insert the spray’s nosal deep inside nose Push the plunger downwards

Give the prescribed dose

Keep the child back in original position

 

Storage:

Keep the spray away from direct sunlight (Avoid keeping it in windows) Store in cool dry place, away from children’s access

Once used the separate plunger and the bottle and store back in the original packet

Midazolam nasal spray (0.5 mg/spray)

1-5 kg

1 spray in each nostril

6-10 kg

2 sprays in each nostril

11-15 kg

3 sprays in each nostril

16-20 kg

4 sprays in each nostril

21-30 kg

5 sprays in each nostril

  

Midazolam nasal spray (1.25 mg/spray)

>30 kg

3 sprays in each nostril
