Unfortunately home is the most common place where accidents happen. Most common reason for this may be
unawareness and neglect. Other places where accidents can happen are
1.Balcony of the house
2.Terrace
3.Back and front yard
4.Windows
5.Road close to house
6.Staircase / lifts
1.Installing safety guards at staircase especially when your child starts crawling
2.Parapets in balcony and terrace should be high enough for child not to climb on it. Or it should be made of
see through thick glass or plastic material which removes the necessity of the child to climb over and look
over. Additionally safety nets can be installed in front of balconies and air and sunlight ducts.
3.Windows should have safety grills. Window latches should be beyond the reach of children. Avoid keeping
objects near windows on which your child can climb.
4.Furniture should be heavy and not easily movable. Corners of the furniture should be rounded or padded.
Television should not be on movable lightweight table or wheeled table. Flat screen television should be
mounted on wall.
5.Avoid keeping sharp tools and knives within reach of a child.
6.Avoid keeping medications in reach of children. Always keep medications in locked cupboard.
7.As far as possible common cough-cold, fever medications should have child safety caps.
8.Electricity points within reach of child should have safety occluders when not in use.
9.Home and bathroom Floor should have anti-skid tiles as far as possible.
10.Kitchen door should be locked as far as possible when not in use especially when you have toddler at home.
11.Bathroom locks should be above 4-5 feet from the ground so that child does not lock himself or someone
else in the bathroom.
12.Toddler cot should have side protection to avoid falls during sleep.
13.Garden instruments and chemicals should be always locked.
14.Main door of the house should be always closed if your toddler is unattended.
15. Do not stand near balcony with toddler in your hand. Occasionally toddler can suddenly jump out of your hand
and fall down the balcony. Always make sure that you have firm grip on toddler when holding in your arms.
16. Avoid seeded fruits and nuts to toddlers.
17. Balconies with electric wires close by should have appropriate protective shields.
1.Always chose age appropriate toys.
2.Do not choose toys with loose small parts for a toddler.
3.Washable toys and soft toys should be washed periodically.
4.Crayons and colors should be non toxic.
5.Avoid buttons and coins on the floor.
6.Prefer toys made of non toxic materials. Toy label should mention that.
7.Prefer wooden traditional toys against plastic toys.
8.Battery operated toys should have screw fixed cover, so that toddler is unable to open that and swallow
button batteries. As far as possible avoid using button batteries.
9.It is not recommended to use baby walkers as they may pose threat of accidents if child looses control over it.
10.Front yard should have non concreted floor, preferably soil.
11.Toddler toys should not have long strings to avoid accidental hanging.
12.Toddler toys should not have sharp edges and gaps where finger can be caught
1.Do not refer to medicines as chocolate or candy.
2.Keep medicines out of reach and locked in cupboard as far as possible.
3.Toilet products like bleech, toilet cleaners should be out of reach.
4.Camphor should be out of reach from toddler. This can cause seizures in toddlers if ingested.
5.Do not store any hazardous material in candy boxes.
1.Gas stove should not be on the floor. It should be kept at sufficient distance from the edge of the kitchen
surface so that accidental switching on of gas burner can be avoided.
2.Cooking vessel’s handles should be turned inwards so that accidental spills can be avoided.
3.As far as possible electrical sockets should be at least 4 feet above ground. If they are low lying then use
socket occluders when not in use.
4.Older children should be encouraged to dry their hands before touching electrical buttons.
5.Hot water buckets should be filled just before their use.
6.Avoid using synthetic material cloths when you are feeding hot drinks to your child. As these can stick to
scalded skin.
7.Burning candles, incense sticks, diyas should be out of reach of toddlers.
8.Works like ironing cloths should be done while children are sleeping or should be done on high platform.
9.Always keep portable fire extinguisher at home.
10.Never hold a hot drink and child at the same time.
11.Toddlers should never be allowed to burn crackers during festivals.
12.Parent should never hold toddler in hand while burning a cracker.
1.Car seat is mandatory especially for infant
2.Child of any age should never be seated in front seat of the car.
3.On a back seat child should always be on the side seat and never in the middle seat.
1.Keep the bathroom doors locked.
2.Bathroom doors should be at least 4 feet from the ground.
3.Never keep half filled buckets in bathroom.
4.Your child should never be left alone in bathroom
All parents and caregivers should learn basic CPR / rescue for chocking etc.
